Zoe LI's Jardin d'Hiver, a four-story townhouse renovation, is a testament to the power of design in transforming spaces. Inspired by the juxtaposition of a bustling city street and the serenity of a private garden, LI brings the comforting greens and ambiance of seasonal change into the scheme. The design is a perfect blend of aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability, with a focus on natural light, air flow, and eco-friendly materials.
The uniqueness of Jardin d'Hiver lies in its structural simplicity and eco-conscious design. LI relocated the stairs beyond the second floor at the rear of the building, keeping the original steps space open as trapezoids on the third and top floor. This allows light and air to flow freely among floors. The new steel stairs and all opened windows reveal a complete view of the rear garden, creating a connection with nature.
The design was realized with a focus on earth-friendly construction and conservation. The shapes and structures are simple, and most materials used are natural and recyclable, such as steel and wood. The facade and the rear of the house are opened up with simple line aluminum windows to save energy. The result is a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible.
Despite the challenges faced during construction, including a chemical leak explosion in the city, the project was completed successfully. The incident prompted a reevaluation of the design, with a focus on urban security and the need to balance aesthetics with safety. The final design is a testament to LI's dedication to creating spaces that are safe, beautiful, and sustainable.
Jardin d'Hiver is not just a design project; it's a statement on the future of urban living. It demonstrates how design can transform spaces, improve quality of life, and promote sustainability. The project was recognized for its innovation and excellence, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This award is given to designs that showcase outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
In conclusion, Zoe LI's Jardin d'Hiver is a shining example of how design can transform urban spaces into serene, eco-friendly havens. It's a testament to the power of design in creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also sustainable and safe. It's a design that truly embodies the spirit of innovation, aesthetics, and sustainability.
